After a long winter and wet spring, there is no better feeling than starting your bike and hitting the road on a sunny day. While you’re exploring new paths, and finding new adventures, Cayuga Mutual will ensure you’re protected with the right kind of motorcycle insurance in Ontario.
What Type of Motorcycle Insurance is Required in Ontario?
Bike insurance can differ from province to province, just like auto insurance does, but in Ontario, The Ministry of Transportation requires motorcycle owners to have at least reasonable liability coverage on the bike before hitting the road.
Mandatory bike insurance in Ontario contains the following:
- Third-Party Liability: Provides extra coverage in case of injury and damage to others and their property resulting from a vehicle accident.
- Direct Compensation: Damages to your motorcycle are covered to the extent that you’re not at fault.
- Uninsured Automobile: Medical costs and damage are covered if an uninsured rider is at fault.
- Accident Benefits: Provides coverage for you and your family if you are injured or killed in an automobile accident.
All the above are the minimum, compulsory requirements to keep your motorcycle or moped legal on the road. Optional insurance can be purchased and is generally offered as follows:
- Higher Third-Party Liability: Provides additional coverage in case of injury and damage to others and their property. Limits can be upped to $300,000, $500,000, $1 million, or even $2 million.
- Increased Accidental Benefits Coverage: Provides additional coverage for you and your family if you are injured or killed in an automobile accident, including supplementary medical, rehabilitation and attendant care, caregiver, non-earner, and income replacement benefits.
- Coverage to insure the motorcycle for physical damage or loss by Specified Perils, Comprehensive, Collision or Upset, and All Perils.
You can buy combinations of these coverages to protect you against the damage/loss of your motorcycle caused by theft, fire, and other unpredictable events.
How Much Does Motorcycle Insurance Cost in Ontario?
The cost of motorcycle insurance in Ontario varies like any other insurance policy since many factors are at play. Have you taken a motorcycle training course? Do you have your M1, M2, or M? How old are you? Do you have any tickets? All of these, and many more factors, can affect the cost of your motorcycle insurance in Ontario.
Hot Tip: Government-approved motorcycle safety courses can help you become a safe and responsible rider and let you take your road test sooner while possibly reducing your insurance premiums.
Typically, motorcycle insurance is cheaper than normal auto insurance because your bike is not on the road year-round. Contact your Cayuga Mutual Agent to discuss extended coverage for your bike so you can save money and spend more time enjoying the open road with the protection you need.
Why is Motorcycle Insurance Expensive in Ontario?
Ontario gets a lot of heat for higher insurance prices compared to other provinces in Canada, however, the main reason motorcycle insurance is so expensive in Ontario, and in general, is the high-risk factor.
According to data from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), in a 10-year period between 2012 and 2021, police investigated 326 fatal motorcycle incidents that claimed the lives of 342 motorcyclists. Over the 10 years, the motorcyclists who died were reportedly the at-fault driver in 60.7 percent of the crashes, with 39.3 percent of those who were at fault being drivers of other vehicles.
